September 2017 - The Lisburn Advertiser
Vice-Chairman of the Council's Leisure and Community Development Committee, Councillor Rhoda Walker takes to the basketball court along with Cedarville University Women s Basketball team from Ohio, USA, and children who are taking part in the Summer Scheme at Lough Moss Leisure Centre.
Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council was delighted to team up with Cedarville University Women s Basketball team from Ohio, USA, at Lough Moss Leisure Centre recently as part of its annual Summer Scheme.
The extremely talented basketball team, who attend the Christian university, are on a tour of Northern Ireland and have been playing friendly basketball matches against several Northern Ireland Clubs, as well as promoting their faith through their love of basketball.
Organised by the Council s Sports Development Unit and local basketball club, Phoenix, the group of players took time out of their busy schedule to introduce children to the sport of basketball. Children also had the opportunity to try a range of different American sports and games, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience!
The Vice Chairman of the Council s Leisure and Community Development Committee, Councillor Rhoda Walker had the privilege of meeting the team and also had the opportunity to get involved and develop her own basketball skills! She said: On behalf of the Council I was delighted to welcome Cedarville University Women s Basketball team to Lough Moss Leisure Centre and to the Council area. It s not every day we get the chance to welcome a team of this calibre to one of our facilities.
Lough Moss Leisure Centre offers a summer scheme for children in the area every year, so it was great to have the team involved this year, adding something that little bit different. The team provided a unique coaching experience, whereby children had the chance to learn from the best, develop their current skill base, and ignite their passion and enthusiasm not just for the game of basketball but for sport in general.
I would like to thank Cedarville University Women s Basketball team for playing a special part in the summer scheme. I have no doubt that this experience will help inspire many of the children to get involved in sport and have fun doing so.
