New Translink partnership keeps mobility scooter passengers better connected
November 2024 - The East Down Advertiser
Public transport operator teams up with Disability Action to facilitate more mobility scooters across network including the East Down Area!
Translink has launched a new partnership with Disability Action to deliver mobility scooter assessments at bus and rail stations to permit travel and ensure a safe, comfortable and convenient journey experience for the passenger.
Danielle Campbell, Accessibility Manager, Translink, said: “We’re committed to ensuring our services and facilities are accessible, inclusive and welcoming spaces, keeping everyone better connected.
“We’ve listened to our customers and want to make the process of using mobility scooters on public transport as simple as possible, removing barriers to travel so it’s great to join forces with Disability Action and give more people the opportunity to travel independently on our network, supporting social inclusion and their sense of wellbeing.
“This new partnership with a charity that is an expert on mobility matters means we will be able to process mobility scooter travel applications faster and reach as many people as possible to make them aware of the service available as well as give them the opportunity to ask any questions, building their confidence prior to travel.
"This is the latest accessibility development in our commitment to continuous improvement as we remain focused on providing a consistent customer experience for people with all levels of abilities.”
Angela Hutchison, Disablity Action, said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with Translink colleagues and their customers to provide mobility scooter assessments throughout Northern Ireland.
“Being able to access public transport is so important to enable a person with a disability to access education, employment and social activities. Our role is to facilitate a faster application process and during the assessment build the confidence of scooter uses on the Translink bus and rail network by giving advice and answering questions.
“This will ensure a person with a disability has access to safe, comfortable and accessible transport to meet their individual travel needs. Working with Translink in this way helps us all to achieve an inclusive and safe travel experience for everyone to benefit from.”
David Ritchie, mobility scooter user, said: “It is great to know that I am no longer restricted and can travel anywhere in Northern Ireland on my scooter. Getting the assessment was a straight forward procedure and it now gives me the freedom to use both buses and trains with easy access. I would encourage anyone with mobility issues to sign up and make use of the excellent transport facilities we have available.”
