Getting off to an Olympic Start with NSPCC at Cutters Wharf!

Double Olympic medallist, Paddy Barnes joined members of the Ardglass Vikings at Cutters Wharf to launch their 14th Annual Viking Boat Races taking place on the first May Bank Holiday Weekend. In association with Älska Swedish cider, all proceeds for the event are in aid of NSPCC Northern Ireland.

And for the first year ever, Cutters Wharf, Stranmillis are running a Pro Viking Race Day on Saturday 3rd May, with professional rowing teams from all over Ireland and further afield, including the Isle of Man competing head-to-head.

The main day then begins at noon on Sunday 4th May and will see hundreds of would-be Vikings given the opportunity to race the actual long ships featured in the Irish-Canadian hit series Vikings, premiered on RTE recently. Whilst onlookers can enjoy impressive falconry displays and amazingly accurate Viking re-enactments; all accompanied by hearty barbeque fayre and fabulous entertainment.

Male, female or mixed teams of ten, with members aged 18 or over, are all welcome to apply! They are asked to raise an entry fee of £200 per team through sponsorship, and the more keen Vikings are encouraged to go the extra mile and raise £400 or over, to receive FREE t-shirts, delicious barbecue items and refreshing Älska Cider as a reward for their efforts. Fancy dress and raffle prizes, as well as presentation of the Cup make it a great day out for those wanting to support a good cause!

Fionnuala Savage, NSPCC Northern Ireland community fundraising manager, said: “The annual Viking boat races are the perfect opportunity to test your strength, speed and endurance. It’s also a chance to dress up and have a great bank holiday, all while making a difference for vulnerable children and young people in Northern Ireland.

“We rely on public support to help us continue our work with some of the most vulnerable children in Northern Ireland. Together we can help shape a society where abuse doesn’t go unchallenged, where children are empowered to seek out help, and where every call for support can be answered.”
