April 2015 - The East Down Advertiser
Downpatrick Ulsterbus Driver, Alan McCoubrey was recently crowned ‘Translink Bus Driver of the Year’ at the Federation of Passenger Transport, Northern Ireland (FPT NI) Awards.
FPT NI is the trade body promoting the use of public transport and represents the leading bus and coach operators across Northern Ireland.
The ‘Translink Bus Driver of the Year’ recognises top performing drivers who deliver high standards of customer service alongside high quality driving skills.
Judges commented on Alan’s tireless promotion of Translink and public transport in the local community; especially make travelling on public transport easier and less stressful for disabled passengers and particularly those with special needs.
Kay Sharkey, Translink’s Service Delivery Manager for Downpatrick and Newcastle, nominated Alan for the award: “Alan has worked as Translink Driver for over 20 years and I am delighted that he has been awarded Bus Driver of the Year. Alan is a great role model and a key mentor for new drivers offering his guidance and support, welcoming them and ensuring they are familiar with their various routes.
“Alan continues to represent Translink in a positive nature every time he is behind the wheel or out visiting schools.”
The runner up was awarded to Arlene Rafferty, Belfast Europa Ulsterbus Driver.
Translink was also awarded the Raising Industry Standards Award for their Bus Vehicle Fire Safety Campaign.
William Patton, Translink Health, Safety, Quality and Environment Manager commented on the importance of bus fire evacuation: “We worked in partnership with Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and People First to produce the Translink ‘Out in 3’ fire safety leaflet and training. From October 2014 to July 2015, all 2000 plus Metro and Ulsterbus Drivers will be given training covering the key fire safety programme.
“Bus drivers play a key role in ensuring the safe evacuation of buses in the event of a fire emergency and it is vitally important that they are properly trained and instructed in what to do.” William concluded
