Traders praise new look Conway Square in Newtownards
September 2015 - The Ards Advertiser
Local business owners described the newly transformed Conway Square in Newtownards as having a fresh and vibrant feel that is "a great boost for business".
Public realm works
The space was recently refurbished as part of Ards and North Down Borough Council’s Public Realm Scheme in Newtownards and represents a total investment of £1.5M by the Department for Social Development.
The design reflects the history of the area, retaining the Blair Mayne Statue and TT Memorial within their existing setting. Natural stone paving and traditional lighting columns reflect the look and feel of the rest of the town. Special features include bespoke seating with back rests and the new boxed Carpinus trees providing natural shade and a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the newly created space.
Heritage captured in street features
Leigh Nelson, President of the Chamber of Trade, Newtownards said:
“It is great to see the square finished. It has a lively, modern feel and loads of people are using it. This has been a real boost for business, with local traders reporting increased sales. Local business owners and visitors have been very complimentary about the space’s new look, particularly the finer details, such as names within the composes, that capture the area’s heritage."
Arts events in the square
Emily Crawford manages Ards Arts Centre in Conway Square. She said:
“Visitors to the Arts Centre have been commenting on how wonderful Conway Square looks since the public realm work has been completed. I agree that it looks fantastic. I am looking forward to being able to use the square for future arts events.”
