North Down schools can go eco with The Big Lunch Competition

PRIMARY and nursery schools in North Down are invited to take part in The Big Lunch ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ competition where three lucky schools across Northern Ireland, will be selected to win a £200 cash prize to support sustainable living in their school community!

The competition is being delivered by The Big Lunch in partnership with the national food waste campaign ‘Love Food Hate Waste’.

To take part, schools must host a Big Lunch, which demonstrates how they have encouraged visitors, staff and pupils to think about their food waste as part of the event.

Pupils or their teachers should simply compose a description (in less that 500 words) of their Big Lunch, after it has taken place, including three images and explain how they love food and hate waste. .

Completed entries should be sent to Grainne.McCloskey@thebiglunch.com on, or before 5.00pm on 27th June 2014.

The Competition will also count towards the Eco-Schools programme, as part of their waste topic.

Spokesperson for The Big Lunch, Grainne McCloskey said: “Together with Love Food Hate Waste The Big Lunch is encouraging North Down schools to bring their entire community together, to help promote and share sustainable living ideas including reducing food waste.

“The Big Lunch is the UK’s annual get-together for neighbours, an idea from the Eden Project, made possible by The Big Lottery Fund.

“It provides the perfect recipe to have fun with your neighbours feeding community spirit and helping to build stronger neighbourhoods. People are the key ingredient, with those taking part creating friendlier communities in which they start to share more, from conversation and ideas to skills and resources.

We are calling on schools and communities across Northern Ireland to take part this year and host their own Big Lunch events. The free pack is undated making it easier for schools to join in!

Get started by visiting www.thebiglunch.com to request a free pack or call 0845 850 8181 to speak to one of the team.
