FARRY OFFICIALLY OPENS NEW SCIENCE LABS AT SERC

Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry officially opened three newly refurbished science labs at South Eastern Regional College (SERC) Bangor campus where he met with tutors, together with key stakeholders and also toured the College's facilities.

The £150,000 refurbishment has breathed new life into the science department which now boasts modern, industry-standard science labs, a specialised instrument suite, state-of-the-art chemistry laboratories and preparation rooms, a new animal house, an open plan teaching centre which incorporates practical seating and the latest technology and resources which have been designed to enhance and support learning.

While visiting SERC, the minister also met with students who are preparing to compete at the 51st BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition which is taking place from 7-10 January. The Minister previewed the student's award entries which included 'investigating bird feeding habits in enriched woodland" and 'testing antibacterial properties of woodland flora.'

The students will now travel to Dublin to compete against 28 projects from 15 schools across Northern Ireland and will gather to display their work to fellow students, judges and visitors.

Ken explained "I think this is another example of how well educated and talented our students are. I know the students are going to do us proud at the competition. The college has a strong work ethos and supports its students to become independent learners who are work ready."

The refurbishment is the latest phase of development following a £12M investment to deliver innovation, generate economic growth and create jobs thanks to the Performing Arts and Technology Innovation Centre which is currently underway at SERC's Bangor Campus.
