Students A ‘mazed’ visitors at Balmoral Show

June 2015 - The Lisburn Advertiser

Staff and students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) recently attended the 147th Balmoral Show, which took place at Balmoral Park Lisburn to showcase their range of full and part-time courses and apprenticeship programmes starting in September.
SERC staff and students were on hand to showcase their wide range of vocational training courses including Land-Based Technology, Horticulture, Carpentry, Motor Vehicle, Animal Management, Engineering and many more.

SERC Principal and Chief Executive Mr Ken Webb said that he was very pleased to have attended the show for the third consecutive year. He said “Balmoral Show allows us to highlight the importance of education and training to the local agri-food industry.
“Events such as the Balmoral Show are a great opportunity to raise awareness of the wide range of vocational courses now open to prospective students. It’s also great for students to demonstrate what they are capable of, build relationships within the sector and meet and talk to industry experts.”

Throughout the high profile event SERC students encapsulated the energy and enthusiasm of the Show through their various activities including digger handling demonstrations, competitions and product displays.  Visitors were able to purchase student merchandise as well as sit in the College’s very own bespoke rally car, custom built by the Motorsports Engineering students who were on hand to talk about their course.   Visitors were also invited to undertake confidential health checks to assess blood pressure, cholesterol, height, weight, body fat analysis and blood glucose from SERC’s Nurse lecturer Rosemary Peters.

SERC Assistant Head of School for Construction and Engineering Services Tim McAlister explained: “Many people don’t realise that SERC offer a wide range of land-based vocational courses including land-based technology and heavy motor vehicle in state of the art workshops which boast industry standard equipment and facilities. With a fleet of modern machinery and highly experienced staff, we pride ourselves on giving our students as much hands-on experience as possible, from industry visits, guru lectures and work placements.”
