Public Invited to Have Their Say on Future of Belfast’s Green Spaces and Waterways

August 2019 - The East Side Advertiser

Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor John Finucane

Belfast City Council has launched two new strategies that will shape the long-term approach to planning, investment and management of the city’s parks and open spaces, rivers and lakes today.

The Green and Blue Infrastructure Plan (GBIP) and Belfast Open Spaces Strategy (BOSS) cover the period 2019 – 2035, and the public has until 6 September 2019 to have their say on both draft strategies.

The GBIP aims to ensure that our vegetated areas (the green) and waterways (blue infrastructure) are planned strategically to maximize economic, social and environmental benefits in and around our urban areas.

The BOSS aims to protect, develop and improve access to good quality open spaces for everyone in order to improve health and wellbeing, support urban wildlife and biodiversity, and encourage investment.

Both strategies are key to helping the city realise ambitious targets laid out in the Belfast Agenda, its community plan, and the Local Development Plan, the framework that will guide planning decisions in the future.

Launching the public consultation today at Grove Bowling Pavilion, Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor John Finucane, said: “These important long-term strategies will influence how the city approaches investment and management of its green and blue assets now and for future generations.

“A recent example of a project that will be shaped by GBIP and BOSS is the proposed One Million Trees project, which aims to see the trees planted in Belfast within the next 15 years.

“Another is a shared space project in the north and west of the city to create and reconnect 12 interlinked sites stretching from Glencairn to Bog Meadows, incorporating Springfield Dam. This will create 12 kilometres of walkways and cycle paths thanks to funding from PEACE IV and Department for Communities.

“These projects and many others will make Belfast a better place to live in and visit, with sustainable development and environmental principles at their core. I would therefore encourage anyone with an interest in these issues to read the plans and let us know their views.”
