The new season of Silver Screenings at the Strand Arts Centre, supported by Specsavers Connswater, starts this month with classics including Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Calamity Jane showing.

The successful programme for older audiences was given a new lease of life last year, thanks to support from Specsavers and Opticians and Audiologists in Connswater and the partnership is set to continue for 2018.

The weekly classics give older audiences the chance to get out to the cinema and reminisce about previous trips to the pictures, followed by a screening of a movie classic and almost 1,000 visits were made to the Strand through the project last year.

To celebrate the success of the partnership residents of Arches Care Home and Greenvale Residential, along with a seniors group from Duncairn Community Centre, enjoyed mince pies and Christmas carols by the Templemore Band before a festive screening of Elf.

The caring staff of those who have attended have reported that it has been a very positive experience for those involved with some participants viewing the cinema outing as the highlight of their week.

Lynsey Caldwell, director of Specsavers Connswater, said: “We’re delighted that by supporting the Silver Screenings project at the Strand Arts Centre, our local cinema, it has enhanced the social wellbeing of the older population in the area.

“We are committed to improving the lives of the community in which we operate and are keen to engage with audiences about the hearing and audiology services that may benefit them.”
