Newry, Mourne and Down Policing & Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) has delivered new kiddie cut-out signs to local schools to increase awareness of school parking issues and speeding close to primary schools.

The signs have already been delivered to 12 schools across the District, with another five schools to receive theirs before the end of October.

Councillor Terry Hearty, Chairperson of Newry Mourne and Down PCSP said, “Road safety is a key priority for schools in our area. I am absolutely delighted that PCSP have been able to supply the kiddie cut-out road safety signs and I look forward to seeing their positive impacts.”

Mrs Downey from St Clare’s Abbey Primary school said, “The signs are much needed at the school and well appreciated. We are delighted the PCSP have been able to support the safety of our pupils by providing these signs.”

There is evidence to show that the road signs have a positive impact on schools and help to improve road safety. It was reported by schools and nurseries that the signs help cut down speeding, reduce illegal parking and remind the drivers that there are lots of children in the area. The signs are designed to be the height of primary school children, they are eye-catching and child friendly and it is hoped that children will be encouraged to advise parents if their behaviour is possibly endangering other children.

Ryan Duffy, Community Planning Sergeant, PSNI said, “Parking and speeding are particular issues at some of our local schools and the safety of the pupils and other road users is paramount. These road signs will help to improve road safety at schools, and we would like to thank the PCSP for giving local schools the opportunity to receive these signs. I would also ask parents, grandparents and other road users to park safely and have consideration for other road users and pedestrians when dropping off or picking up children from schools.”

The PCSP will keep in contact with the schools and assess the impact of the road signs during the school year.
